Tow bar on your electric car: what are the options?

Written by Richard Burger | Mar 17, 2026 9:21:46 AM

More and more people are choosing a used electric car. But what if you also occasionally want to take a caravan, trailer or bike carrier with you? Is a tow bar on an electric car actually possible? The short answer: yes, but there are some ground rules. In this blog, we explain how it is, which electric used cars are suitable and what alternatives there are if your car does not have a tow bar.

Can any electric car get a towbar?

A tow bar is quite possible on an electric car, but the car must be technically suitable for it. This involves three things:

  1. Power of the motor and battery - The car must have enough power to pull extra weight.
  2. Strength of the chassis - The frame must be able to handle the forces of a caravan or trailer.
  3. Braking power - The car must be able to stop safely with extra load behind it.

Whether your used electric car is suitable can always be checked with the RDW. The vehicle data will tell you exactly what maximum towing weight is allowed. Is nothing mentioned? Then officially the car is not allowed to tow anything.

RMC towbar: always a good option

No tow weight registered with the RDW? No worries: you can always opt for an RMC tow bar. This is a hook especially for a bike carrier or a towbar box. Please note: this is not a towing weight, but only a nose weight. This is often around 50 kg. Perfect for bicycles or an extra suitcase, but not for a caravan.

Which used electric cars have towing capacity?

Fortunately, there are more and more used electric cars that are suitable for towing a caravan or trailer. Below is an overview of popular models and their maximum towing weight:
